5 Korean Expressions You’ll Hear All the Time in K-Dramas
If you enjoy watching K-Dramas, you may already know more Korean than you think.
Korean dramas are full of short expressions that Koreans also use in everyday conversations. You may hear them during romantic scenes, arguments, funny moments, or when something completely unexpected happens.
Here are five Korean expressions you’ll hear again and again.
1. 진짜? — Really?
진짜 literally means “real” or “really.”
When it is said as a question:
진짜?
it means:
“Really?”
For example:
A: 나 다음 달에 한국에 가.
I’m going to Korea next month.
B: 진짜?
Really?
Your intonation is important. 진짜? can express surprise, excitement, disbelief, or curiosity depending on how you say it.
2. 괜찮아 — It’s okay / I’m okay
괜찮아 is one of the most useful expressions for Korean learners.
It can mean:
It’s okay.
I’m okay.
No problem.
For example:
A: 미안해.
I’m sorry.
B: 괜찮아.
It’s okay.
You may also hear someone ask:
괜찮아?
Are you okay?
The same word can therefore be used both as a statement and a question depending on intonation.
3. 어떡해? — What should I do?
Something terrible just happened in a K-Drama.
What comes next?
Very often:
어떡해?
It means:
“What should I do?”
or
“What are we going to do?”
For example:
지갑을 잃어버렸어. 어떡해?
I lost my wallet. What should I do?
You will also hear 어떡해! as an emotional reaction when someone is worried, shocked, or overwhelmed.
4. 미쳤어? — Are you crazy?
This is another expression you may hear frequently in dramas.
미쳤어?
means:
“Are you crazy?”
However, Korean learners should be careful with this expression.
Depending on your tone and relationship with the other person, 미쳤어? can sound playful between close friends—or quite rude and aggressive.
So this is a great expression to understand when you hear it, but not necessarily one you should immediately start using with everyone.
And definitely not with your boss!
5. 대박! — Awesome! / No way!
대박 is a very common reaction to something surprising or impressive.
Depending on the situation, it can mean:
Awesome!
Amazing!
Wow!
No way!
For example:
A: 나 시험에서 100점 받았어.
I got 100 on the test.
B: 대박!
Awesome!
It is especially common in casual conversations.
