Stop Saying 당신: How to Say “You” Naturally in Korean

One of the most common mistakes made by Korean learners is translating English words directly into Korean.

A good example is the English pronoun “you.”

Many Korean textbooks and dictionaries teach:

you = 당신

This translation is not completely wrong. However, if you use 당신 every time you would say “you” in English, your Korean may sound unnatural, distant or even confrontational.

Let’s look at how Koreans actually refer to the person they are speaking to.

Does 당신 Mean “You”?

Yes, 당신 can mean “you.” The problem is not its dictionary meaning but how and when it is used.

English speakers use “you” constantly:
• Where do you live?
• What do you do?
• Do you like Korean food?
• What is your name?

Korean speakers usually do not translate every “you” in these sentences as 당신.
For example:
당신은 어디에서 살아요?
Where do you live?
This sentence is grammatically possible, but it may sound awkward when spoken to someone you have just met.
A Korean speaker would be more likely to ask:
어디에서 살아요?
Where do you live?

The subject is omitted because both speakers already know who the question is about.

Korean Often Omits the Subject

Korean is a context-dependent language. When the subject is already understood, it is frequently omitted.
English requires a subject in most complete sentences:
Do you like Korean food?
In Korean, you can simply ask:
한국 음식을 좋아하세요?
There is no word corresponding directly to “you,” but the meaning is perfectly clear.
Adding 당신 is unnecessary:
당신은 한국 음식을 좋아하세요?
Although this sentence is grammatically correct, it does not sound as natural in an ordinary conversation.

Koreans Use Names and Titles

When Korean speakers need to identify the person they are addressing, they commonly use a name, position or relationship title.
For example:
선생님은 어디에서 일하세요?
Where do you work, teacher?
민수 씨는 어디에 살아요?
Where do you live, Minsu?
사장님은 커피를 좋아하세요?
Do you like coffee, sir/boss?
어머니는 지금 집에 계세요?
Are you at home now, Mum?

This reflects an important feature of Korean culture and language: the relationship between the speakers affects how they address each other. Instead of choosing one universal pronoun for “you,” Korean speakers select an appropriate title—or omit the subject entirely.

Why Can 당신 Sound Rude?

당신 can sometimes create distance between speakers. In an argument, it may sound like an accusatory “you.”
For example:
당신, 왜 그렇게 말해요?
Why are you talking like that?
Depending on the speaker’s tone, this can sound confrontational.
Imagine an English argument in which someone strongly emphasises the word “you”:
Why did YOU do that?
당신 can carry a similar feeling in certain spoken situations. This is why Korean learners should be careful about using it with strangers, teachers, customers or senior colleagues.

When Is 당신 Actually Used?

당신 is still used in Korean, but only in particular contexts.

1. Between Married Couples

Some married couples use 당신 to address each other.
당신, 오늘 몇 시에 와요?
What time are you coming home today?
However, not every couple uses it, and its tone can vary depending on their relationship and age.

2. In Songs and Poetry

당신 appears frequently in songs, poems and emotional writing.
당신을 사랑합니다.
I love you.
In this context, 당신 can sound romantic, literary or emotionally expressive.

3. In Advertisements and Public Messages

Advertisements may use 당신 to address an unidentified audience.
당신의 꿈을 응원합니다.
We support your dream.
Here, 당신 is not directed at one particular person in a face-to-face conversation.

4. During Arguments

당신 may be used when someone is angry or confronting another person.
For that reason, learners should not copy this usage unless they clearly understand the situation and emotional tone.

What Should You Say Instead?

Use this simple rule: If the listener is obvious, omit “you.”

Instead of:
당신은 어디에서 일해요?
Say:
어디에서 일하세요?
Where do you work?

If you need to identify the listener, use a name or title.

선생님은 어디에서 일하세요?
Where do you work, teacher?
수진 씨는 커피 좋아해요?
Do you like coffee, Sujin?

If you do not know the correct title, restructure the sentence.

Instead of trying to find a direct translation for “you,” ask the question without a subject.
성함이 어떻게 되세요?
What is your name?
어디에서 오셨어요?
Where are you from?
한국에 얼마나 오래 사셨어요?
How long have you lived in Korea?
These sentences sound natural without 당신.

When someone asks, “당신은 어디에서 왔어요?”, the question can sound rather direct or even slightly confrontational. The sentence is grammatically correct, but native Korean speakers rarely use 당신 in this kind of everyday conversation.

When speaking to someone for the first time:

Koreans usually avoid both 당신 and 너. Instead, we use the person’s name or title, or simply leave out the word “you.” Even when the other person is younger, using polite and honorific language is the safest and most respectful choice.
For example, instead of saying:
당신은 어디에서 왔어요?
Koreans would normally say:
어디에서 오셨어요?
“Where are you from?”
This sounds much more natural and polite in Korean.

A Quick Comparison

당신은 이름이 뭐예요?
✓ 이름이 뭐예요?
✓ 성함이 어떻게 되세요?
당신은 어디에서 왔어요?
✓ 어디에서 왔어요?
✓ 어디에서 오셨어요?
당신은 한국 음식을 좋아해요?
✓ 한국 음식을 좋아하세요?
The sentences containing 당신 are not necessarily grammatically incorrect. They are marked with an X because they are often unsuitable or unnatural in ordinary polite conversations.

Final Thoughts

Learning Korean is not simply a matter of replacing each English word with a Korean word.
당신 may appear in the dictionary as “you,” but natural Korean depends on context, relationships and levels of politeness.
In most everyday conversations, remember these three choices:
1. Use the person’s name.
2. Use an appropriate title.
3. Omit “you” completely.
If you follow this rule, your Korean will immediately sound more natural.
